With its mix of on-the-job disaster, unheeded safety precautions and picturesque shots of worried families you would be forgiven for mistaking Channel 9’s telemovie Beaconsfield for the longest Work Safe ad you’ve ever seen. Australians love a good survival tale and Beaconsfield joins a long list of competent if not terribly memorable telemovies about people being recovered. What Beaconsfield does have going for it more than anything else is two incredibly strong performances at the centre in the form of Lachy Hulme and Shane Jacobson as Todd Russell and Brant Webb respectively.
The Beaconsfield mining disaster dominated the news in 2006 and the footage of the two miners walking out alive is the sort of image that’s embedded in your memory even if you didn’t see it live. The trouble when retelling any well known tale is to find a new angle on the material, which Beaconsfield never really does. This is a well-made telemovie and there are genuine moments of suspense and humour but at times it feels like they’re going through ticking off a list of events as they happen. The two lead performances stop this from ever feeling too artificial though, especially when it comes to the pair singing ‘The Gambler’ as they happen to get them heard for the first time by the rescuers or Brant scoffing down Teddy Bear biscuits.
